Looking for the best engagement photo locations in and around Salem, Oregon? Here are my favorite spots for the perfect backdrop.
Having been a professional photographer since 2019, I’ve had the opportunity to capture engagement sessions all over. One of the most common questions couples ask when they inquire is where they should take their engagement photos. The scenery plays an important role in storytelling and helps bring each session to life.
To help you decide where to book your engagement session, I’ve created a list of my favorite engagement photo locations.

Silver Falls is a perfect location for engagement photos, offering a wide variety of backdrops all in one place. If you’re looking for forest scenery, open fields, and waterfalls for your engagement session, Silver Falls State Park is an ideal choice.
South Falls offers ample parking and access to dense forest areas. The walk to the waterfall is steeper and, depending on the time of year, can be muddy and slippery. However, the ability to capture photos behind the waterfall makes the effort well worth it.
My personal favorite spot for engagement photos at Silver Falls is North Falls. It has the easiest and shortest walk to a waterfall and features the widest waterfall in the park. This area also includes a river, which provides several natural spots for photos along the water. Parking at North Falls is very limited, so I recommend arriving early.
Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most popular engagement photo locations and for good reason. If you’re dreaming of open fields and golden-hour light for your session, this is where I recommend. Rolling hills and golden fields provide a stunning backdrop for couples.
The area also features a short but slightly steep hike up a hill, offering a beautiful view of the valley. Just be aware that in late summer and early fall, controlled burns are sometimes used to manage the grass.
I recommend visiting this location in spring or summer. There is little to no shade, so it’s best for golden hour sessions or really early in the morning.

We are so lucky to live near the Oregon coast, which offers so many breathtaking locations. The coast is a perfect choice if you’re unsure whether you want forest or beach photos, as there are several spots where you can have both. Not to mention the beautiful rock formations scattered throughout, which make for stunning backdrops. One of the most classic spots on the Oregon Coast is Pacific City, where you can capture the iconic large rock in the ocean as a backdrop. The area also features dunes and tall grasses in the sand, offering a variety of natural settings for engagement photos.
The Oregon Coast is beautiful year round, so you don’t have to worry about browning foliage or dying grass. Keep in mind, though, that the coastline can get windy and chilly, so plan accordingly. That said, some of my favorite sessions have been on gloomy, overcast days.
Pacific City is also perfect for golden hour sessions. You can even extend the shoot into the evening and capture cozy beach bonfire photos, which make for a fun and memorable addition to your engagement session.
This location is also dog-friendly, unlike Baskett Slough and some areas of Silver Falls. So if you can’t imagine your engagement session without your furry best friend, there’s no issue here!

If you’re dreaming of mountains and endless views, Mary’s Peak is the perfect location. It offers incredible mountain scenery that creates a romantic and adventurous feel in your engagement photos.
Like some of the other locations, there is a short but steeper hike if you want the full overlook of the area. However, the main parking area at the top also has fields and a few outlook spots that are easy to access.
Because Mary’s Peak is at high altitude, it can experience heavy snowfall that lasts into spring. In the fall, you may encounter fog and high winds. For the best experience, I recommend visiting this location in late spring or summer.

Latourell Falls is one of the newer locations I’ve had the chance to shoot at several times this past year. This spot offers an easy walk to a tall, stunning waterfall. What I love about this location is the height of the falls it creates a backdrop so beautiful you’ll want to print and hang it on your wall.
If you visit in the summer, you can get close to both waterfalls. For those up for a hike, there’s also a second waterfall with a pool right in front, perfect for incorporating water photos into your engagement session.
Latourell Falls offers more than just waterfalls, though. The surrounding forested areas, a charming bridge, winding paths, and a stairwell provide lots of variety in scenery all within a short walk from the main parking lot.
The Columbia River Gorge is a bit of a drive from Salem, but in the spring, it’s a must see for engagement sessions! This area offers endless fields of purple, yellow, and red wildflowers, all set against breathtaking mountain and river views.
My favorite time to shoot here is at sunrise, when the sun rises over the Columbia River! If you’re looking for wildflowers at their peak, plan your session for April or May.

Speaking of flowers, the next location is the Portland Rose Garden. With endless rows of roses, this is the perfect spot if you’ve been dreaming of flowers in your photos. The garden offers a variety of rose colors and scenic spots to explore, making it ideal for a romantic, classic engagement session.
You can even bring a blanket and props for a picnic-style shoot among the blooms. This is a popular location, so I recommend scheduling your session very early in the morning to avoid crowds.
Honorable mentions for flower filled engagement sessions include the Tulip Festival and seasonal farms like the Peony fields. Keep in mind that these locations are seasonal, and the Tulip Festival, in particular, can get very crowded. If you’re hoping to capture engagement photos in the tulips, I highly recommend purchasing a sunrise ticket for a quieter shoot.
Let’s be honest you really can’t go wrong no matter where you choose to have your engagement session. Oregon is filled with beautiful scenery everywhere you look, from forests and waterfalls to mountains, rivers, and beaches. No matter which location you pick, you’ll come away with stunning photos that capture your love and the magic of the moment.
